WeChat, a mobile text and voice messaging communication service developed by Tencent in China and first released in January 2011, seems to have closed down its physical presence in Nigeria and now operates from South Africa. WeChat in Africa is managed by Naspers one of the investors in Tencent.
It had been rumoured earlier in the year, that majority of its in-house staff had been laid off and that this was a prequel to the country closing shop in Nigeria but Idemudia Dima-Okojie Country Manager for WeChat had come out to debunk the rumour, according to him, “there is no truth to the rumour that WeChat is exiting Nigeria. Nigeria remains one of our focal growth areas in Africa. We’ve been in Nigeria for a few years and this year, we’ve decided we need to streamline our operations on the ground in order to achieve optimum strategic objectives.”
But it seems there was some credence to the earlier rumour as reports have it that there is no longer any local staff on ground in Nigeria.
